Shadow Puppet Workshop

Shadow Challenge -

Shadow puppets are one of my favourite puppet styles to make. Although simple materials such as Bristol board and tissue paper may be used for construction, the challenge is in the cutting of details and in finding pivot points to help create puppet movements on the screen.

In 2000, fellow puppeteer Sharon Wueppelmann and I formed our own company  "Pegaron Puppetry". We performed in a range of puppet styles and taught many puppetry workshops. Sharon introduced me to the world of shadow puppets and she was a gifted teacher.  Our company has since been retired, but many of our puppet shows were stories performed with shadow puppets. When presenting "Pegaron Circus", many of the shadow puppets and sceneries were attached or painted directly onto acetate sheets, as in the example below. Each circus scene was then manipulated on the glass of an overhead projector, which projected the show onto a large free-standing shadow screen.

Coloured Shadow Puppets:
                Let's make & Perform

In this workshop you will enjoy learning about shadow puppets too!

Create your own amazing coloured shadow puppets during this fun, interactive workshop. Using Bristol board patterns or free-hand drawings along with the materials provided, participants will learn to construct joined shadow puppets with one moving part. Tissue paper will be used to add beautiful colours, and textured accents will also be explored.

The workshop will begin with a brief shadow show demonstration, and will also include a discussion on how to make a simple shadow screen. Students may test out their puppets and share magical puppet scenes on illuminated shadow screens provided.

This workshop is suitable for parent/child activity, kids 8 years and up, teens and adults.  All the supplies and materials are included with this workshop, which may be customized to match a variety of themes such as seasonal characters, mythology, and more!
